Welcome and Welcome Back Mission Meadows STUDENTS!

August 21, 2020

Dear Mission Meadows Parents and Guardians,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe, well, and enjoying these final days before our first day of school on Tuesday, September 8. I am looking forward to a successful start of the 2020/2021 school year. In this notification is information regarding the beginning 2020/2021 school year; our new Learning Management System – Canvas; Data Confirmation that all families must complete; Device & Materials Distribution Days (Dates & Times to be announced soon); 2020/2021 Mission Meadows Elementary Theme; and current health order websites.

The Beginning and First Six Weeks of the 2020/2021 School Year

When the new school year begins on Tuesday, September 8, as stated in the most recent Community Update related to Instructional Programs from VUSD Superintendent, Dr. Doyle (please click HERE), the VUSD School Board Members reached consensus that all students in Vista schools (PreK-12) will begin the school year in a virtual learning environment for the first six weeks. This will allow for the students who chose Vista Classic to return to in-person learning on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, provided the San Diego County Health and Human Services allows for in-person schooling. I would like to thank all of the Mission Meadows families for selecting the learning model that will work best for their child, Vista Classic or Vista Virtual. Please click HERE for the previous Community Update related to Health and Safety.

Please note the last two links listed above do not illustrate specific times for each portion of the instructional day, it does show the daily time frame for each portion for the day, including live (synchronous) learning, and recorded or independent learning (asynchronous) learning. After the school year begins, your child’s teacher will be communicating times for learning on our new learning Management System, Canvas.

What is CANVAS?

Mission Meadows teachers will be using a new learning management system (LMS) called Canvas. The goals of the system are to include more clearly established conditions for student learning, to improve outcomes for student learning, and to increase student-teacher-parent engagement. Another strength of this robust LMS is that assignments are listed in precise order; as students finish the first assignment, they click “next” for the following assignment. All learning is linked in one place. Canvas replaces Google Classroom as the online interface for students that we used in the spring. Students will access Canvas through Cloud Connect. We are looking forward to students, staff, and parents using Canvas for student learning.

Important Data Confirmation Information

While we know that you have enrolled your child at Mission Meadows Elementary, it is important for every parent or guardian to complete the Data Confirmation procedure. Every family is required to complete the online Data Confirmation procedure in their Aeries parent portal by Friday, August 28. Students will not be able to start their first day of school without completing this very important step. By doing this required procedure, you will be able to modify or enter student demographics, emergency phone contacts, medical conditions, and authorization information from year to year. It also allows Mission Meadows documents to be available to parents. This process replaces the normal “first day of school packets” where parents are normally required to fill out new emergency cards, and sign various documents and authorizations.

Mission Meadows Device & Materials Distribution Days – Dates & Times will be announced soon!

In order to support our students and families with virtual learning, we will be organizing student technology device checkout to all Mission Meadows families in the Mission Meadows  parking lot during days and times that I will announce soon. TK, K, and Grade 1 students will receive an iPad and power cord, while students in Grades 2 - 5 will receive a Chromebook and power cord. We will also be distributing student curriculum materials, student supplies, and other materials to support virtual learning for our students. I will be communicating a great deal of information about this event that will include social distancing and all required safety and health measures well before the scheduled dates and times. We are excited to see our students and families as we begin an exciting school year.
